What is a Biobank?

A biobank is like a library, but instead of books, it stores human biological samples (such as tumors, blood, and other tissues), along with health information and medical images. Researchers use these resources to study diseases and develop new treatments and cures.

Why is the Kids Eye Biobank Important?

Childhood eye conditions are often rare and spread across different regions, making it difficult to gather enough data for meaningful research.

The Kids Eye Biobank addresses these challenges by:

Centralized resource

Acting as a centralized resource for research and education

High-quality

Storing high-quality data to preserve their integrity and future research utility

Connection

Connecting researchers, clinicians, and families around the world

Support

Supporting a wide range of research on rare pediatric eye diseases

First Biobank

Leading the first pediatric ophthalmology biobank with a dedicated focus on rare childhood eye cancers

Research facilitation

Championing a platform that facilitates research aimed at improving vision outcomes and overall child health

Where is Data Stored?

  • Biological samples (e.g., blood, tissue, fluids) are stored securely at SickKids Hospital in liquid nitrogen freezers.
  • These tanks are very cold! Their temperature is set to −196 °C
  • Images and personal health data are maintained on a secure digital server

Mission

To collect and store high-quality data on childhood eye conditions and share these resources with a global network of researchers.

Vision

To be global leaders in patient-oriented pediatric ophthalmology biobanking, driving scientific excellence that fills knowledge gaps and improves patient outcomes.
